Gavel Exec: AI-Powered Legal Assistant

Gavel Exec is the AI-powered suite for transactional attorneys. Get accurate, fast, and legally-trained contract analysis and redlining. Built specifically for lawyers, Gavel Exec helps you do your work faster and better, all from within Microsoft Word.

Getting Started: Installation

Use this link, or go to: Microsoft Word > Insert > Get Add-Ins (or Office Add-ins on some versions) > Search for “Gavel Exec."

How it Works: Chat Mode or Playbooks

You can use Gavel Exec in two modes:

  • Chat Mode, where you talk to it like an assistant to ask it to redline, draft legal work, summarize, or point out legal issues in your documents, or
  • Playbook Mode, where you use Gavel's playbooks or set up your own to ask it to review and redline a document based on your rules

Chat Mode: Use Cases

Gavel Exec's Chat is built for:

1. Asking Questions or Getting Summaries

Ask Gavel Exec to explain terms, summarize sections, or identify risks. Examples:

  • “What are the key obligations in this section?”
  • “Summarize the indemnification clause in client-friendly terms.”
  • “Which clauses relate to termination?”

2. Revising Clauses or Drafting New Language

Highlight any part of your document and ask Gavel Exec to rewrite or improve it using legally trained, domain-specific AI. Examples:

  • “Make this clause more buyer-friendly."
  • “Rewrite this section in simpler terms."
  • “Draft a limitation of liability clause in the same language as the remainder of this paragraph.”

3. Redlining Documents

Use Gavel Exec to redline any contract based on your specific instructions or reference material. Redlines appear in the chat for your approval. Use the "Apply All" button to apply them all and Accept/Reject directly in Microsoft Word. You can ask for general markups or give precise instructions based on deal context. Examples:

  • “Redline this clause to reflect seller-side positions.”
  • “Apply redlines for a strong investor preference.”

4. Running Redlines Using Reference Documents (Coming Soon)

Upload a related document (like an LOI) and ask Gavel Exec to redline your agreement to match terms or highlight inconsistencies. Examples:

  • “Redline this based on the uploaded LOI.”
  • “Make sure the financing terms in this agreement align with those in the attached notes, and suggest redlined changes.”

Playbook Mode: Benchmarks or Custom Rules

Built-In Playbooks for Market Standards

Gavel Exec includes built-in playbooks that we've developed with expert attorneys in corporate and real estate law. These allow you to instantly run redlines across your document based on:

  • Market-standard benchmarks
  • Client-favorable positions (e.g., strong buyer/seller terms)

Build Your Own Playbook

You can also create your own playbooks by adding rules individually or uploading your own documents (such as checklists or spreadsheet playbooks). Gavel Exec will convert them into reusable playbooks that apply consistent redlines across future deals. Playbooks can include:

  • Redlines
  • Comments to opposing counsel
  • Comments to your client for internal review

How To Build Your Own Playbook

  1. Go to the Playbooks tab, and click "+ Create new"
  1. Click Create new rule, and add as much detail as desired under the Description, including specifics on markup guidance for redlining.
  1. Run this playbook to get results on what passed and what failed, and markup suggestions to have this document comply with your standards.
