Calculations (formerly known as Invisible Logic)

We're getting great questions about using Invisible Logic (now called Calculations) in Workflow Builder 2.0, so we wanted to address the most common ones. Let's dive in!

Q1: Wait, can I still use Invisible Logic in Builder 2.0?

Absolutely! We've just given it a new name — Calculations. You'll find many of the same features you loved, now conveniently located on one "Calculations" page at the top of your screen when you're editing a workflow. No more hunting around!

Q2: I found the Calculations page, but my formulas look blank. Did I lose my logic?

Don't worry, it's still there! Here's what's happening: each Calculation variable needs a fallback value.

If you're working with a simple formula, you can pop it right into the formula field. But if you've got more complex logic going on, that formula field is actually your "fallback" — the value that gets assigned when your logical conditions aren't met. Often, this is just an empty text string: " "

To find (and add) your logic, just click the "Add Logic" button for each Calculations group.

The cool part? When you group Calculation variables together, you can use the same logical condition to assign values to all the variables in that group. Pretty handy!

Q3: How do I actually input values into my formulas?

Great question! Click on the formula field and you'll see a dropdown menu with all your options:

  • Need to enter text? Click "Enter text" and we'll add the quotation marks for you
  • Want a space? Click "Enter space" and we'll drop in a " "
  • Looking for a variable? Just click it (they all start with @ symbols)
  • Need functions like add or concatenate? Keep scrolling down in that dropdown

You can also type formulas manually if you prefer, but the dropdown is super helpful for seeing everything that's available.

Q4: Can I use these variables in my workflow and documents?

Yes! You can reference these variables in your question/page logic within the questionnaire, and you can use the same syntax you'd use for any regular variable in your DOCX or PDF output documents. They work seamlessly across your entire workflow.

Q5: Do you have more documentation on Calculations?

Yes! Check out our full documentation on Calculations, and as always, we're here to help.
