Use a Custom Domain
Gavel provides you with a personalized subdomain (yourname.gavel.io).
Accounts on the Pro and Scale tiers can also set up their own Custom Subdomain (for example, yourname.yourfirm.com).
Your Gavel workflows must reside on their own separate subdomain. So, for example, if you already have content at www.yourfirm.com, you cannot have your Gavel interviews at www.yourfirm.com. Instead, they must be at something.yourfirm.com.
How to Set up a Custom Subdomain
To set up a Custom Subdomain, you'll need to modify the DNS records for your domain. Here's how to do this:
- When you created a Gavel account, you create a .gavel.io subdomain (your ANAME record). For example, docs.gavel.io.
- Now, choose the Custom Subdomain where you want your Gavel instance to reside. For example, docs.yourfirm.com.
- Go to your DNS records (which might be at Cloudflare or GoDaddy or Name.com, for example) and create a CNAME record to point to the ANAME record, like this:
Type: CNAME
Host: docs.yourfirm.com
Answer: yourfirm.gavel.io
TTL: 300
- Email us at help@gavel.io with your custom subdomain URL.
Other Notes to Keep in Mind
For the Host, some domain DNS providers, like GoDaddy, will only want you to add the docs portion, without the yourfirm.com (since the .yourfirm.com is already assumed).
You will need to wait up to 24 hours (but likely less than an hour) for your domain provider to finalize this link.
Curious about what this means? The ANAME record is the address we create for you dictates where the server is (e.g., yourname.gavel.io). The CNAME record is what you create on your DNS records (e.g., subdomain.yourfirm.com). By creating the CNAME record, you're connecting the two.
Personalized Email. Emails from Gavel are sent from a generic @docautomation.org email address so that they are unbranded. Meanwhile, if you prefer further customization, users on the Scale plan may also send default emails from their own domain/email with a Mailgun account. If you'd like to do so, please send us an email with your (1) Mailgun email; (2) Mailgun API Key; and (3) Mailgun domain.
