The Basics: Working with Questions

Question Types

All question types in Gavel remain the same as outlined in our Help Guide on Question Types, except for Invisible Logic questions. However, the interface for adding and organizing them has changed slightly.

Adding a New Question

There are multiple ways to add a new question in Gavel:

  1. Using the "+ Question" button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. Clicking the "+ New" button in the left sidebar, then “Question.”

Editing a Question Type

Once you’ve added a question, you can select its type, allowing you to customize the format your client answers will be recorded in.

Converting a Question into a Repeating Item

If you need to collect multiple responses for a single type of input (e.g., listing multiple beneficiaries, children, or assets), you can convert a question into a Repeating Item. This allows users to dynamically add as many responses as needed.

Adding Options to Choice Questions

For multi-select, single select, dropdown, and checkbox questions, you can add or remove answer choices easily.

Referencing a Repeating Item

The choices available in option questions can pull answers from a previous repeating item question. To do this, select “Reference a Repeating Item” and choose the answers you'd like to display as options.
