Calculations & Creating New Variables
Our brand-new Calculations section lets you create custom variables tailored to your client's needs!
Below, we’ll explore why you might want to create custom variables—and how to do it effectively.
Automating your calculations
Gavel can handle calculations for you, like dividing a client's annual salary by 12 to determine their monthly pay.

Combining multiple answers
You can merge different client responses into one single variable, such as first name + middle name + last name, to create a new full name variable. This way you don’t have to ask the client for their first, middle, and last name and then ask them for their full name again.

Creating new conditions
If you need to customize your client's journey and/or documents based on specific criteria, you can create conditional variables.
Example: An attorney who only represents minor children (under 18) could set up:
- Date Question: client_birthday
- New variable: eligibility_date

The formula you see in the second image ensures that the eligibility_date is exactly 18 years before today (whatever date the client completes this questionnaire).
3. Logic:
Next, you can set logic to determine what pages and questions the client sees based on their birthday.
